Space Jam: A New Legacy launch includes a 91,000 item NFT tie-in

]

On the same day we learned that Fortnite is adding a LeBron James skin to its metaverse, the PR machine for Space Jam: A New Legacy cranked out a different batch of digital collectibles. However, instead of directing viewers to a gloriously aging 90s-era website, they had to use NFTs.

Launching July 16th on HBO Max, Space Jam: A New Legacy follows Michael Jordan’s 1996 movie by transporting LeBron James into a digital world full of cartoons and other Warner Bros. properties, so the marketing fit makes more sense than it might appear. The difference here is that instead of merely slipping toys into fast food kids’ meals or tossing out limited edition physical cards, there’s a hope that interest in the family-friendly flick will spur the collection of non-fungible tokens.

The Space Jam tie-in serves as a launch event for Niftys.com, a marketplace for the tokens that bills itself as “the ultimate destination for creators, collectors, and curators.” Topps, Mark Cuban, NBA Top Shot creator Dapper Labs, and Samsung Next are among its financial backers, and they all hope they own a piece of the next big collecting trend.

The website suffered some outages when it initially launched but is back up and running, promising a free NFT to anyone who registers (you can get one more for sharing a social network post about the event). Your one-of-a-kind digital item is one of 91,000 that have been minted on its blockchain for the event, giving this more of a breakfast cereal prize giveaway vibe than a hunt for a golden ticket.

As a child of the ‘80s and ‘90s, I’m a bit too jaded to believe these will be worth more than most of the trading cards, pogs, and beanie babies I remember, but at least they’ll only take up hard drive space instead of clogging landfills. While the environmental impact of blockchain technology has become controversial, Niftys claims its implementation uses Palm NFT Studio to reduce energy consumption by 99 percent compared to other methods.

At press time, there are still Space Jam NFTs available “while supplies last,” and the website lists 57,367 / 91,980 NFTs, although it’s unclear whether that is the number available or already claimed. While snagging an NFT so it can become part of your playlist, viewable as a spinning GIF of one of the movie’s characters, is surely enticing, most people will be in it for the scarcity. Free or purchased (at $2.99 each), the cards each feature one of nine characters and come in five tiers of rarity. There are ten “legendary edition” 3D cards available, and if you’re not lucky enough to own one of them, then at least you can still see the exact same image on Instagram.

Lakers news: LeBron James releases free NFT ahead of Space Jam 2

Sound the alarm – Warner Bros. just dropped free NFTs for the release of Space Jam: A New Legacy including LeBron James and the rest of the Tune Squad. A total of 91,000 limited-edition tokens featuring the Los Angeles Lakers superstar as well as different characters like Bugs Bunny, Lola Bunny, Tweety Bird, and the rest of the eight members of the team – including LBJ.

The studio, in partnership with a Mark Cuban-backed NFT website called Niftys, has rolled out the promo on Monday in anticipation of the scheduled premiere of the film on Friday, July 16:

All you have to do is head on over to the site and sign up and you can instantly claim your first NFT. And, if you share the page via your social media accounts, you can claim another free NFT. You can also opt to purchase an additional NFT for $2.99 which is limited to one purchase per account per day. All of these tokens will be randomly awarded to your account and will be available until supplies last.

As with most NFT projects, these digital collectibles have different tiers depending on rarity. For this particular one, there are five different levels and Niftys has released a specific number of tokens per tier with 3,000 tokens for commons, 1,5000 for uncommons, 500 for rare, 100 for epic, and 10 for legendary.

This is the biggest NFT drop to promote a film to date (via Variety) so make sure you don’t miss out.

UPDATE: With a massive turnout of fans trying to claim (and purchase) their Space Jam-themed NFTs, the site has been a bit buggy for the past few hours so please don’t go nuts if you’re free NFT doesn’t show up in your account.

“LeBron James has jumped onto the NFT bandwagon”: Lakers MVP hands out free Space Jam: A New Legacy NFTs ahead of the movie’s release

LeBron James dips his toes into the NFT game as he dishes out a couple free NFTs based on his movie, Space Jam: A New Legacy.

After rumors of Space Jam 2 potentially going into production for nearly a decade, LeBron James took it upon himself to bless the basketball community with another movie based around the sport. The movie will find the Lakers superstar team up with the Looney Tunes to help save his son from Al G-Rhythm as he battles it out with the Goon Squad.

In preparation for the release of this movie, LeBron James and the Space Jam: A New Legacy crew has decided to do a massive NFT drop. NFTs took over during the beginning of this year as many were investing thousands of dollars into the non-fungible token business to hopefully have them be worth more down the line.

NBA TopShot was one of the first to do pack drops quite frequently as the NFTs would feature in-game moments from NBA superstars. Moments such as LeBron James dunks went for over $300,000 while other cards featuring guys like Lamelo Ball were also placed in a similar category.

LeBron James drops Space Jam 2 NFTs.

In collaboration with Mark Cuban’s NFT company, Niftys, LeBron James had dropped 91,000 Space Jam 2 themed NFTs. All of these tokens will be classified into 5 tiers which range from common to legendary. The three tiers in between as uncommon, rare, and epic. For comparison, there will be 3000 commons available while only 10 legendarys will be available.

This marks the biggest NFT drop in collaboration with a movie, in history. It’s fairly simple to collect your free NFTs as you click on the highlighted link here and simply claim your first free token. The characters can include, of course, LeBron James and also other members of the Looney Tunes such as Taz, Tweety Bird, and more.

Servers have reportedly been quite slow due to the unprecedented number of people who are on the website at once. The Niftys social media team has reassured their consumers on having the website up and running as quick as they can.
